Colosseum: the panoramic lift made in Trentino
June 2023

The Colosseum becomes more accessible thanks to a project in part from Trentino. On 30 May, in fact, the new panoramic lift was inaugurated, which allows even people with disabilities to admire the monument in its entirety and whose metal sliding cage was made by the company from Pergine Metal Working. The work lasted a total of five years and was carried out in full respect of the ancient architecture, whose technical execution was based on the experience gained in the recent research and development project called 'Innovative Structural Systems', in collaboration with the University of Trento, Eurac and Politecnico di Milano.

Technical specifications

The panoramic lift, sponsored by the Italian Cinema Orchestra, was built by the company Maspero. It is 22 metres high and fits harmoniously into the monument, reducing the occupation of space and fully respecting the existing masonry. The structure, realised by Metal Working, is equipped with a completely screened transparent cabin in cor-ten steel, in harmony with the colours of the millenary walls of the Colosseum. The lift, designed for three landings and three observation levels, allows access to the gallery between the second and third order, returned to use after careful restoration work, with conservation and safety purposes.

Metal Working: Trentino excellence and open innovation

Metal Working is a company based in Trentino Sviluppo's Business Innovation Centre in Pergine Valsugana that designs and manufactures metal frames for lifts and filter units for industrial air purification. Founded in 2008, after 15 years of activity it has 48 employees, 10.5 million turnover and 4000 square metres of factory where more than a thousand tonnes of steel sheets are processed each year.

In 2021 the company took part in Scintille, the Trentino Sviluppo project created with the aim of supporting local companies in the search for technological solutions for product innovation with a view to open innovation. Metal Working worked with a team of students trying to meet a specific challenge: to improve the tracking of orders during all phases of the production process. During the six weeks of work, an application was conceived that allows secure tracking of the various jobs, from design to packaging and shipping.
