Expo 2015 has also borne fruit in the world of startup companies. The agreement between Alfa-CM, an investment company controlled by the business angel Sirio Vurro, and the start-up Eco-Sistemi, specialising in the purification of water using recycled plastic stoppers and based at Progetto Manifattura, the green incubator of Trentino Sviluppo, was announced right at the end of the World Fair in Milan. The agreement was reached at the end of the process proposed by the “Nursery of Ideas”, which stopped off in Rovereto last spring precisely to select the best startup companies. Alfa-CM has signed an agreement to purchase equity, with a gradual increase in Eco-Sistemi’s shares.

Eco-Sistemi obtains a private sector investment

The meeting between the business angel Sirio Vurro and Eco-Sistemi took place during the Opportunity Days at the Nursery of Ideas, the space dedicated to innovation inside Expo 2015 in Milan, designed and managed by the Italian Pavilion, Fondazione ItaliaCamp and the Ministry for Agricultural, Food and Forestry Policy. Although numerous investors and businesses participated at the event, the agreement with the startup company based in Rovereto is the first real financial investment achieved, showing signs of genuine interest in Eco-Sistemi’s technology.

«In the context of the scouting activities I carry out, at Eco–Sistemi I found very interesting technology and a well-prepared team, aware of their need for managerial support, which is what I will bring, in addition to the seed money», commented Sirio Vurro, Managing Director of Alfa-CM.

Dario Savini, Managing Director of Eco-Sistemi, explained that he found very specific managerial skills at Alfa-CM, meeting Eco-Sistemi’s needs perfectly: «It is the first time that we have found these skills, thanks to the opportunity offered by the Nursery of Ideas and the support of Progetto Manifattura, the clean tech incubator of Trentino Sviluppo, where we have gained all the skills necessary to develop our business and succeed in communicating with investors». Savini indeed attended the training courses of Trentino Sviluppo’s Innovation Academy, a training programme that helps entrepreneurs to obtain specific skills, including pitching and strategies designed to obtain venture capital and investment by business angels.

«With this support, both financial and in terms of know-how, given that Vurro has long experience of product industrialisation with Pirelli, we can continue the process of development which in a short time has taken us from the original group of inventors to a company now appreciated throughout the world» explained Savini.

At the moment Eco-sistemi has contacts in the USA, where it recently participated at Glo-Sho, an event for clean tech startup companies, the Middle East, Asia and South America. «The water problem is an increasingly global issue, and we offer low-cost, efficient and innovative solutions. This is the reason why so many investors have contacted us», concluded Savini.

The company, which signed the agreement on the final day of Expo, on Saturday 31 October, has received the compliments of the authorities, the Nursery of Ideas team and the sponsors.
