Ducati Energia invests in Trentino & in the Mechatronic Hub

Ducati Energia has made the decision of investing in Trentino and it will strengthen its activities at the Pole of Mechatronics by investing in brand-new and bigger offices for its research centre, opened in Rovereto in 2006. In addition to this, the multinational headquartered in Bologna has decided to assign the development of a cutting-edge project to its research unit based in Trentino: this project will focus on the prototyping of the new generation railway signalling systems that Ducati is currently developing, an activity that will provide new job and business opportunities for the companies operating in this industry.

The agreement accompanying this decision was signed today in Rovereto by Guidalberto Guidi (president of Ducati Energia), Alessandro Olivi (vice-president of the Autonomous Province of Trento), Flavio Tosi (president of Trentino Sviluppo), and the representatives of the social partners Manuela Terragnolo (FIOM-CGIL), Paolo Cagol (FIM-CISL) and Luciano Atanasio (UILM).

The Ducati Research Centre started its activities at the Technology Pole of Rovereto back in 2006 and, over the years, it developed a series of interesting projects, like the electric quadricycles “Free Duck 4” and “Free Duck 2” and a pedal assisted bicycle that monitors and transmits environmental data such as temperature and pollution levels.

Ducati Energia - an industrial group that employs 700 people in 6 facilities scattered around the globe, from India to Argentina passing through Croatia and Romania - has decided to invest even more in Trentino, strengthening the research centre that few weeks ago moved its activities in the buildings of the Pole of Mechatronics, in Rovereto. This new project in the railway sector will provide new jobs, transfer of knowledge from the headquarters of Bologna, and interesting business opportunities for all companies located in Trentino and operating in this sector.

The project is called S.A.F.E. (an Italian acronym that stands for «Sviluppo Apparecchiature Ferroviarie Evolute») and it concerns the development of advanced railway technology, focusing in particular on products such as modern and highly safe signalling systems and inertial batteries. This project will be developed by Ducati Energia in Rovereto and it will be partly financed by the Autonomous Province of Trento, with a non-refundable grant that will be provided by the Agency for the promotion of economic activities (APIAE) pursuant to Provincial law no. 6 of 1999 («Single law on economy»). The investment of Ducati Energia will amount to a total of 5.7 million euros, which will be allocated for the next 36 months. Thanks to the agreement reached today, three new people will be hired at the offices in Rovereto, bringing the workforce employed in the research centre to a total of 20 people, whose contracts will not expire until June 30, 2022.

Furthermore, the importance of this agreement is highlighted by the positive economic impact that it will have for the local companies operating in the field of mechatronics. Ducati Energia has decided to commit to the investment in the territory of at least 600,000 euros in addition to staff costs, as well as ensuring that for five years after the end of the project a part of the production costs linked to the manufacturing of the products developed and sold will be reinvested in the Ducati Research Centre or in the companies operating in the territory, for an estimated economic impact of 7-9 million euros.
